The birth of an idea
This deck happened on accident, or at least that’s what I tell myself. I had been creating fiber art panels made with felt and flocked vinyl. It started with tattoo imagery, simple traditional designs like a moth, a snake, then a clipper ship. Not being able to stop, I began to make ones out of images from my Lenormand deck since they were bold and simple. Once I really got the hang of it, I wanted to challenge myself with more details.
As things for me normally circle back to Tarot, I thought it may be neat to see what a version of the Aces would look like using this technique. The drawing process had to be simplified from what I was used to. Knowing that the image would need to translate into fabric. Focusing on the bold tones of the felt to contrast against each other while flocked vinyl lines help bring the image into a crisp reality. Each color transition had to be a new layer of felt.
I wanted to blend what I know about the elements and colors of tarot with the Rider-Waite-Smith universe. While this deck feels familiar, it is not meant to be a clone deck. It’s a hybrid of my own Sawyer’s Path Tarot and Rider-Waite Smith ideas. I have removed the people because I wanted to focus on the art and energy of each card. What they portray and what that may look like as a gift, lesson or guide. Each card has a way of speaking to the very fibers of our souls... If we dare to look, feel and listen.
The process to make a panel took me between 10 to 15 hours each to complete. Above is a quick 48 second reel of that process.
